Somewhere in Arizona — A former Sheldon resident, along with her teammate and five other two person teams, are racing from Los Angeles California to New York…..on riding lawnmowers.
Katie Knight and her fellow competitors left Los Angeles on July 10th, travelling the breadth of the country at 5 mph. This is all part of a reality TV show called “The Great Lawn Mower Race.”
Producers of the show say that, during the first several days of the trip, law enforcement has been one of their most challenging obstacles. The group was stopped and shut down by the California Highway Patrol.while traversing the Mojave Desert. The patrolmen wouldn’t let them continue due to the heat. So, the contestants got something they weren’t expecting, their lawnmowers and the trailers they were pulling, got towed through the remainder of the Mojave Desert.
The teams ran afoul of the law again when they set up camp for the night in a park. Katie Knight says she and her partner, Tiffany Gill, along with the other five teams, were rousted from their sleep at about 2:00 am by law enforcement and told to get out of their tents. She relates being terrified as the scenario unfolded. After the teams were able to explain their situation to the officers, they were told they could go back to sleep, but if they were still there at 7:00 am they would be issued citations. They were NOT still there at 7:00 am.
Along the way, one of the contestants dropped out of the show. The contestant was, according to producers, poisoning the remaining competitors with her negative attitude, and so was asked to leave the contest. As a result, her partner will be racing solo through the rest of the contest.
Along the way contestants aren’t allowed money or supplies, but must beg, borrow, barter or work for the gasoline, drinking water, food and more that they need to complete the journey to New York City.
