Sheldon, Iowa — Sheldon’s Police K9, along with his human partner, performed well in the recent United States Police K9 Association Trials held in Des Moines.
K9 Balin’s human partner, Sheldon Police Officer Eric Meineke, tells KIWA that Sheldon’s lone K9 took 1st Place in the Apprehension category, scoring 334.01 of a possible 340 points, and claiming top honors among the approximately 40 police K9’s taking part in the trials.
Officer Meineke says the Apprehension competition filled an entire day of the two-day event, and is comprised of events including: False Start, in which the suspect runs, but the dog isn’t permitted to chase; Recall, in which the dog is chasing the suspect, but is called off by the handler; Apprehension Without Gunfire; Apprehension WITH Gunfire; and Handler Protection. Meinecke says the second day of the trials was comprised of: Suspect Search; Evidence Search; Agility; and Obedience.
Meineke says this was the first Patrol Dog Trial in which he and Balin have participated, though they did take part in a Narcotics Detection Trial last year.
Congratulations to Sheldon Police Officer Eric Meineke and K9 Balin for taking 1st Place in Apprehension at the United States Police K9 Association Trials held in Des Moines.
