Benefit Is Saturday For Ashton Man Battling Cancer

Ashton, Iowa — A benefit for Steve and Key Winkel, of Ashton, will be held this Saturday, July 25th. One of the organizers of the event, Jodi Johnson, says the event is to raise money to help defray the costs of medical treatment.

(As above) “Steve is one of our locals here, and recently he received an overwhelming cancer diagnosis. It really hit hard because him and his wife both had previously had cancer, and they battled through it. He’s a tough cookie and he’s going to battle through it this time, but he’s stubborn and he probably wouldn’t ask anyone for help.”

Johnson says one of the fundraising activities will be a Poker Run.

(As above) “We’re going to have a Poker Run. Registration is going to be here in Ashton, at Charlies downtown. They can sign up 10:30 to 11:45 (Saturday morning), and they’ll pull out at that time.

She says there will also be a large silent auction.

(As above) “We have over 80 items that are donated. It’s going to be out at the Osceola County Freedom Rock, so that will be running all day. We hope to have everything set up by 11:00 am so people can come out there and browse, and they can bid on it on the silent auction. We’re accepting donations for the silent auction until Friday, because every day it seems like somebody is bringing us something else, so it’s never ending…which is great.”

Johnson says there will also be a raffle for a very unique item.

(As above) “We’ve got a raffle for a Henry rifle. It’s a ‘Patriot Series’, so it’s one that’s not very easy to get. I mean, not everybody has that one.”

She says the day will culminate in an evening meal.

(As above) “We’re going to have a meal. We’re going to start serving at 5:00 pm, and that’s a $10 meal for a donation. It’s going to be (held) out at the Osceola County Freedom Rock. This is a great opportunity for people to come out and see the Freedom Rock. It is one heck of a monument…it’s really worth seeing. I know a lot of people come from all over to see it. We have something very special right here in Osceola County.”

Johnson says tickets for the Henry rifle raffle are available in advance from her, or any of the fundraiser organizers, or at Brady’s Pub in Sheldon, and will also be for sale the day of the event. For the raffle, as well as the silent auction, she says you do not need to be present to win.
