Regional, Iowa – Another case of highly pathogenic avian influenza, or bird flu, has been detected in northwest Iowa.
The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship says the virus has been confirmed in a commercial layer flock in O’Brien county. It’s Iowa’s eighth detection of bird flu within poultry so far in 2024.
Governor Kim Reynolds has issued a disaster proclamation for O’Brien county as a result. Bird flu can also impact dairy cattle. 13 cases were detected in Iowa dairy herds in June of this year.
Poultry producers and dairy farmers are being told to bolster their biosecurity practices and protocols. Officials with the Centers For Disease Control continue to believe any threat to the general public remains low.
