Primghar, Iowa — We’ve told you who’s running for the Sheldon City Council in November. Now we have the candidates for the school boards and the other cities in O’Brien County, as well as the details of a couple of ballot questions.
For the Sheldon Community School District Board, there are three seats available, and only one incumbent running in a field of six candidates. Jessica Brink is running for re-election. Other candidates include Jacob Bos, Heather Craig, Adam Sauer, Amy Sietstra, and Schuyler Vreeman.
At Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, Kyle McCarter was appointed earlier to his District 4 seat, and will be running for election to the position, unopposed. The District 1 seat is also open at HMS, but no candidates have filed, so the winner will be a write-in.
At South O’Brien, three of the people running are incumbents. Joshua Rausch will be running for re-election to the District 2 spot. Beth A. Sibenaller-Woodall will be running for re-election to the District 4 position, and John Beck will be running for re-election to the at-large position. No one filed for the District 5 seat, so the winner will be a write-in.
As far as ballot questions, one is the $19.16 million bond issue for the Sheldon Community School District:
Shall the Board of Directors of the Sheldon Community School District in the Counties of O’Brien, Osceola, Sioux and Lyon, State of Iowa, be authorized to contract indebtedness and issue General Obligation Bonds in an amount not to exceed $19,160,000 to provide funds to be used together with sales tax bond proceeds to provide funds to remodel, repair, and improve the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems at the high school, with related remodeling and improvements; to build, furnish, and equip additions to the high school, with related remodeling and improvements; to remodel, repair, and improve the east and north side entries; and to make related site improvements?
The other ballot question is for South O’Brien voters, who will be asked to approve a revenue purpose statement:
Summary: To adopt a Revenue Purpose Statement specifying the use of revenues the South O’Brien Community School District will receive from the State of Iowa Secure an Advanced Vision for Education Fund.
In the South O’Brien Community School District, the following Revenue Purpose Statement which specifies the use of revenues the South O’Brien Community School District will receive from the State of Iowa Secure an Advanced Vision for Education Fund shall be adopted.
To provide funds to acquire or install information technology infrastructure (including improving buildings or sites for the purpose of accessing broadband digital telecommunications) and school safety and security infrastructure.
To provide funds to build and furnish a new school building or buildings; to build and furnish addition(s) to school buildings in the District; to remodel, reconstruct, repair, expand, and improve the school buildings in the District; to purchase and improve grounds; for demolition work; to furnish and equip district facilities.
As for the other city races in O’Brien County —
In Archer, Mayor Nathan Mueller and councilmembers Steven Meyer and Aimee Mueller are all running unopposed.
In Calumet, there are three council positions open, with one incumbent and an appointee running. They are incumbent Kim Mesenbrink
and appointee Heath Negus. Joining them on the ballot will be Josie Greathouse.
Hartley Mayor Rodney Ahrenstorff is running for re-election and three people are running for two available council seats. They are appointee Gregory T. Cotter and challengers Matt Dolphin and Kenneth Wendall Embrey.
In Paullina, three people are running for mayor. They are Steve Heeren, John Ihle, and Marlin Sjaarda. Three city council positions are available in Paullina, and six people are running for them. They are incumbent Jean A. Unrau, Jay A. Bootsma, Glenda K. Heithus, Nichole Fintel Jacobs, Kimberly Myers, and Dennis Werkmeister.
Primghar Mayor Kurtis Edwards is running unopposed, and three people are running for two available seats on the Primghar Council. They are incumbents Ryan J. Jenness and Kevin Buck Smith and challenger Tracy Lenz.
Sanborn Mayor Randy Lyman is running unopposed. Five people are running for three available seats on the council. They are incumbent Brian Visser, Kevin Groendyke, Seth Irmiter, Daniel Verrips, and Aaron Wiekamp.
In Sutherland, three people are vying for three spots on the council. They are incumbents, Bruce Engelke and Patrick J. Nelson, along with Nancy Kuehl.
