Sheldon, Iowa — A new program has expanded to Sheldon for high school juniors and seniors.
CAPS stands for the Center for Advanced Professional Studies. It began in the Kansas City area, but is spreading. It has made its way to Sheldon, with other local schools looking to adopt it.
Sheldon CAPS instructor Cindy Prewitt tells KIWA that this program allows high school juniors and seniors to learn about themselves, about problem solving, and about what careers interest them.
Right now there are six students — called “associates” in the CAPS program. Four associates are in the traditional track, where they are partnered with businesses that have different projects that the associates can work on. Two associates are in internships, one at Sanford and the other at Den Hartog Industries.
Prewitt explains that the collaboration with Sioux Center and MOC/Floyd Valley allows the associates to be exposed to the businesses in all of the communities. She tells us that there are more schools looking at joining the program in the spring.
Prewitt says that on the second day of the program students are given a problem to solve. They have two days to solve the problem and present it to the business who has given them the problem.
Prewitt explains how this program is different than a normal high school class.
She encourages anyone in the Junior or Senior class to look at joining the program.
