Spencer, Iowa — The cause of a fire last week in Spencer that heavily damaged a house at 130 East 3rd Street has been determined to be accidental in nature. A press release from Spencer Fire-Rescue says it resulted from improperly discarded smoking materials.
Firefighters responded to the residence a little after 10:30 p.m. on April 6th and found heavy fire venting from the first floor. Multiple attack lines were deployed to put out the fire. As we reported previously, firefighters entered through a second-story window while that was going on after getting a report of a child possibly inside. It was later learned that the child was NOT in the house at the time.
The Dickens Fire Department also provided mutual aid in putting out the fire that was burning on the 1st and 2nd floors as well as the attic. Firefighters remained on the scene of that fire for several hours.
