Sheldon, Iowa — April is National Donate Life Month. Donate Life America says the idea is to help encourage Americans to register as organ, eye and tissue donors and to celebrate those that have saved lives through the gift of donation.
We talked with Sanford Sheldon Physician’s Assistant Sandy Muyskens, who works in the emergency department at Sanford Sheldon, and she tells us why people should consider being an organ and tissue donor.
She says you could affect up to eight other lives with your organs alone, and if you choose to be a cornea and tissue donor, that number could be as high as 40 other lives.
According to Muyskens, it’s easy to become a donor.
Muyskens tells us it’s a pretty common thing to be an organ donor. Over half of adults in the US are registered as organ donors, but they’re always looking for more people to say they’ll be organ donors.
