City Council Close To Taking Ownership Of Former Rec Bowl/Buddz’s Property

Sheldon, Iowa — It was a very brief, very routine meeting of the Sheldon City Council Wednesday when they met in regular session.

The Council adopted resolutions on the bonding of $3.5 million for infrastructure in the Crossroads North Addition, along with the purchase of a new aerial ladder truck for the Fire Department. City Manager Sam Kooiker tells KIWA that the resolutions were the final hoop the City was required to jump through to complete the bond process.

Kooiker reported to the Council that the City is close to acquiring ownership of the lot that formerly housed Buddz’s and the Rec Bowl. That business was gutted by an arson fire back in 2013, for which the former owner is serving a lengthy prison sentence. Kooiker talks about the City’s involvement with the property.

He says the City is one step away from ownership of the property, but the process is still months away from completion.

In other news, Kooiker says the virtual flags for next month’s City-Wide Cleanup are now on sale.

He says there are some types of items that, while the City will pick them up during City-Wide Cleanup, they do require a small additional fee.

Kooiker says paints and other hazardous materials will NOT be picked up, but he says other arrangements have been made for these items.

In other action at Wednesday’s meeting, the Council heard a report on a Change Order made to the new Fire Department aerial ladder truck that’s on order. The small changes involved in the Change Order resulted in about a $17,000 cost reduction to the City on the total price of the apparatus.

Public Works Director Todd Uhl told the Council that the water situation remains pretty much the same as his report two weeks ago. The City’s wells are still able to support about 1.1-million gallons of water usage daily, so the voluntary Water Watch reduction efforts remain in place.
