Sheldon, Iowa — A reminder from the City of Sheldon — unlike in the summertime, fireworks may only be shot off in the winter for a period of 12 and a half hours, starting this Tuesday noon.
This will actually be the third year in which fireworks are so limited for New Year celebrations. The city council passed the measure changing the ordinance in 2022.
Sheldon City Manager Sam Kooiker says he thinks it was a good idea.
Experts say there is a lot of risk around fireworks use, from fire risk to risk of injury, plus people prone to PTSD and pets don’t usually tolerate them very well. But if you can keep your fireworks use to after noon on Tuesday until a half hour into the new year, you shouldn’t run afoul of the Sheldon Police.
Kooiker made his comments on the KIWA Talk of the Town Program, which can be heard on weekday mornings at 8:30 on KIWA-FM 105.3. We also post a podcast of every Talk of The Town Program, and you can find those by clicking here.
