City Seeks Applicants For Open Positions On Two Boards

Sheldon, Iowa — At last week’s Sheldon City Council meeting, the Council was informed that Sheldon native Doug Rodger was resigning from his position on two City boards.

Rodger resigned from the boards because he had accepted a job on the other side of Iowa and would be leaving the community.

Sheldon City Manager Sam Kooiker says Rodgers’ departure leaves openings on the two City boards on which he served.

(As above) “We have an opening on the Board of Adjustment and we have an opening on the Cemetery Board. The Board of Adjustment position deals with zoning-type issues…variances, setbacks, special exceptions and that type of issue.”

We asked Kooiker if there were any special qualifications required.

(As above) “We are looking for someone with a construction mindset for the Board of Adjustment. Doug Rodger brought a lot of that to the table and he’ll be missed because of that. So, we’re looking for someone with a construction mindset, but anyone within City limits is eligible to apply.”

Kooiker says the Board of Adjustments normally meets just a few times a year, as needed.

He tells us more about the Cemetery Board.

(As above) “The Cemetery Board meets, on average, once a year. They’re an important, but not overly active board, so it’s a good opportunity if someone wants to get their feet wet in City government. (The Cemetery Board) mainly governs the rates and fees and processes over at East Lawn Cemetery.”

If you have an interest in serving on either the Board of Adjustment or the Cemetery Board, Kooiker tells us how you can apply.

(As above) “They can drop off a signed letter of interest in the west side drop box at City Hall. They can also send an email to me, sam@cityofsheldon.com, or they can talk to our Mayor (Greg Geels). These are mayoral appointments confirmed by the City Council. We anticipate we’ll bring forward the appointments at the February 3 meeting.”

Kooiker says if you’d like more information on either board position you can call him at the City Office, 712-324-4651.
