Sheldon, Iowa — The intersection of Highway 18 and 34th Avenue, in far eastern Sheldon, will be seeing some major changes following action at Wednesday’s Sheldon City Council meeting.
During the meeting, the council held a public hearing on the proposed improvements to the intersection of Highway 18 and 34th Avenue, near Taco John’s, which includes the addition of a traffic light. Sheldon City Manager Sam Kooiker says the project has been a long time coming.
The engineer had originally estimated the project to cost about $965,000, but the low bid, from Hulstein Excavating in Edgerton, Minnesota came in at about $757,000. The council accepted Hulstein’s bid, following the public hearing.
Kooiker says with the growth of the eastern part of the City, the traffic light is much needed.
City Manager Todd Uhl tells KIWA that the project will include the additions of right turn lanes for east and westbound traffic, as well as the traffic lights to control the traffic flow through the intersection. Uhl says there’s an outside chance that construction will begin yet this fall, but will most ikely begin in spring, 2023.
