Council Approves Support For Prairie Trail Village Phase II

Sheldon, Iowa — When the Sheldon City Council met in regular session Wednesday they approved a Resolution of Support and local incentive for the construction of Phase II of Prairie Trail Village.

Prairie Trail Village is the apartment and townhome complex situated northwest of the Crossroads Pavilion event center. The owners of the complex, in a letter to the City of Sheldon, say the continued growth of Sheldon has caused a waitlist for apartments and townhomes in the existing complex. As a result, they intend to build an additional 30 apartments and 8 additional townhomes. At Wednesday’s meeting, the Council approved a Resolution of Support for an application to the Iowa Economic Development Authority for a Workforce Housing Tax Credit, as well as a property tax abatement on Phase II of the project, which they hope to begin later this year and complete in the fall of next year. Estimated cost of construction is just over $5.3-million, according to the developer.

In other action, the Council held the second reading of an ordinance amendment that clarifies some provisions of the City ordinance pertaining to the Fire Department and EMA. Following the second reading, the Council opted to waive the third reading and pass the ordinance into law.

The Council went into closed session at the end of their regular agenda. City Manager Sam Kooiker tells KIWA that the closed session was for the purpose of the City Manager’s annual review.

Kooiker says there are several openings on City Boards & Commissions at the current time, including: The Trails Commission; the Crossroads Pavilion Board; the Library Board, Museum Board; Board of Adjustment; Cemetery Board; Airport Commission; and Planning and Zoning.  Kooiker says if you have an interest in serving on any of these boards and commissions, please contact the City Office.
