Sheldon, Iowa — The mayor and two council members will take their oath of office when the Sheldon City Council gathers Wednesday afternoon for their regular meeting.
The trio will take their Oath of Office after being reelected in last month’s election. Mayor Greg Geels will be sworn in by Mayor Pro-Tem Brad Hindt. Then, Mayor Geels will swear in both at-large councilman Tom Eggers and 2nd ward councilman Ken Snyder. All three will begin their new 4-year terms on January 1st. Mayor Geels is also expected to appoint 3rd ward councilman and current Mayor Pro-Tem Brad Hindt to another term as Mayor Pro-Tem during Wednesday’s meeting.
In other business, the council will hold a public hearing on, and have the 1st reading of, an ordinance amendment accepting new ward boundaries that were necessitated by shifting population that was revealed in last year’s Census.
The council is also expected to approve a Resolution approving agreements with Bethel Reformed Church that will pave the way for demolition of their fire-damaged church building and the development of housing units in its place. The church stands on the northeast corner of the intersection of 6th Avenue and 7th Streets in Sheldon. The council will also take up a request from AGP to vacate Railroad Avenue, between 7th and 8th Streets.
In other action, the council is expected to approve a resolution to hire an 8th sworn officer for the Sheldon Police Department, after being notified the department had been approved for a COPS Grant for the specific purpose of hiring the additional officer.
The council is also scheduled to go into closed session for the purpose of an employee evaluation.
