Sheldon, Iowa — During their regular meeting this week, the Sheldon City Council heard a presentation on the redevelopment of the former Bethel Church site, which is located on the north side of 7th Street, between 6th and 7th Avenue in Sheldon.
City Manager Sam Kooiker tells us about the original plan for a housing development on the site.
Kooiker says a specific developer then later came into the picture with a proposal much different than the City originally expected.
However, he says economic realities have caused that plan to be changed.
Kooiker describes the twelve proposed housing units.
He says there are still multiple public hearings on the horizon before the project comes to fruition.
The housing development will be built on the site that was formerly home to Bethel Reformed Church. That church building was heavily damaged in a September 2016 fire and was demolished this past fall to make way for residential housing.
The Bethel congregation plans to begin work on a new church building this spring, which will be located on the south side of 7th Street, directly across from their former location.
