Council Gives Green Light To Airport Storage Building Project

Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon City Council has approved the bid and contract for a building to house the new snow removal equipment at the airport.

At their meeting Tuesday the council heard from a representative of McClure Engineering who gave some reasons why they could only get one bid for the project. He said this is a relatively small project that would yield a low profit to the builder. Another factor was the uncertainty created by the steel tariff situation. The City expects an FAA grant will pay for ninety-percent of the project cost. Since the bid was higher than expected, the City’s cost will be about $4-thousand higher than had been projected.

The council also voted to give their final approval to the rezoning of lots on South Third Avenue after waiving a third reading of that ordinance. They also approved a resolution which will prohibit parking from 2 am to 6 am on several downtown streets, and will prohibit parking on the north side of East 6th Street between 19th Avenue and 23rd Avenue at any time. The council took up the resolution as the first reading of an ordinance and moved it on to the second reading.

Several appointments and re-appointments to Sheldon boards and committees were  announced at Tuesday’s meeting. Mayor Katricia Meendering named Duane Wahlstrom to the Board of Adjustment, Doug Rodger to the Cemetery Committee, Dr. Ryan Becker to the Airport Commission and Cindy Runger to the Museum Board. Jeri Clayton and Tom Fuoss will serve on Planning and Zoning. The P&Z Board still has one vacancy to be filled. The Mayor also announced that Jeanne Lichty remains on the Trails Committee with two people still ‘debating’.

The Mayor announced that she has made contact with a representative of a firm the City will consider to assist in the search for a new City Manager. There will be more information available at the next council meeting.
