Council Removes Event Center Assistant Manager Discussion From Agenda

Sheldon, Iowa — When the Sheldon City Council met Wednesday the Mayor announced that the item concerning the Assistant Crossroads Pavilion Manager was being removed from the agenda.

After the meeting KIWA was told that the Pavilion Board had made an offer to an applicant, but at this time they were not ready to submit the name to the City Council.

In other agenda items, there were two public hearings to consider rezoning certain lots on the South 3rd Avenue, to Arterial Commercial.  After the public hearings the council approved both re-zoning proposals. One of these areas will be used by Sheldon Grain. The other was requested by JimmyTalsma to make it possible for his company to construct a building for additional storage.

In other business, the Council held a lengthy and wide-ranging discussion on parking issues. Two of which concerned parking in the downtown area.  Prior to the downtown renovation a few years ago, there were signs posted downtown specifying parking hours.  For some reason those signs were not retained for use after the rebuilding project.  Now the City is concerned about two problems.  The first is caused by vehicles parked downtown all day long, and sometimes all night. It was noted that often these are vehicles that belong to business owners and their rental occupants. Although almost everyone is sure there is an ordinance governing parking downtown, they can’t seem to find it. There is also a question about where signs regulating parking would be located since, they cannot be installed on the existing light poles.  The council would like to consider a two hour parking limit, with no overnight parking in the downtown area, but first they will make a diligent effort to locate a governing ordinance.

The other parking issue concerns problems caused by parking along East 6th Street. The Mayor voiced the opinion that there should be restrictions on the north side of the street from 19th  Avenue to 23rd Avenue.  Further discussion will be resumed after the records are checked for any existing Ordinance.

And, after a brief discussion on how to proceed with the search for a new City Manager, the Council decided to get information on organizations that specialize in executive searches.
