Council Talks Recycling At Wednesday Meeting

Sheldon, Iowa — During his report to the Sheldon City Council at their meeting Wednesday afternoon, City Manager Sam Kooiker shared with the Council a letter from the City’s garbage haulers, Schwarz Sanitary and De Kruif Disposal, suggesting that the City remove the large recycling receptacle from the Community Services Center parking lot for a period of time, to allow the haulers time to inform Sheldon residents that there is curbside residential recycling pickup every other week in Sheldon.

After much discussion, Kooiker informed the Council that he’ll have the matter put on the agenda for the next regular Council meeting, which would give councilmembers an opportunity to take action on the container’s removal.

In other business, the Council voted in favor of the voluntary annexation of the Jinkinson property, along with the property that is planned to house the east side water tower. The Council also voted to voluntarily annex the Tradewinds Apartments, which are located across the street west of Northwest Iowa Community College. The Council also approved a Beer Permit for the Sheldon Truck Plaza and a Liquor License Renewal for Family Table of Sheldon, Ltd, the owner of Cook’s Cafe and Langer’s. And Kevin Millers application as a SCAT volunteer was unanimously accepted.

The Council then went into closed session to discuss the sale of the former Rec Bowl/Budd-Z’s site, which the City now has Qualified Ownership of. Afterward, the Council reconvened in open session and unanimously approved a motion to allow the City to continue negotiations for the potential sale of the property.
