Council To Accept Veteran Cop’s Retirement Notice At Wednesday’s Meeting

Sheldon, Iowa — When the Sheldon City Council meets in regular session this Wednesday (January 19th), one of the items on their agenda is the acceptance of a retirement notice from a veteran Sheldon police officer.

Sergeant David Dykstra has announced his plans to retire from the force after more than 33 years.

Dykstra began his duties as a patrolman with the Sheldon Police Department on October 1, 1988 and has served under four police chiefs during his tenure, Chiefs Bill Van Rennes, Larry Locke, Lyle Bolkema and Scott Burtch. He served as Interim Chief from the time Chief Bolkema retired in November of 2019 until current Chief Scott Burtch took over the reins in April of 2020. In March of last year, Dykstra was promoted to the position of Sergeant with the department. His last day on the job will be July 1st of this year.

In other action at Wednesday’s meeting, the Council will hold a pair of public hearings, one on the Downtown HMA Resurfacing Project and the other on the Downtown Alleys & Parking Project. They’re also expected to award contracts for both projects during Wednesday’s meeting.

The Council is also expected to authorize a resolution authorizing the advancement of costs to fund demolition and clean up of a nuisance property at 315 West 8th Street.

Wednesday’s regular meeting of the Sheldon City Council will be called to order at 4:30 pm in Council Chambers at the Sheldon Community Services Center. As always, the meeting is open to the public, or you may watch the proceedings via YouTube Live.
