Council To Deal With Numerous ‘New Year Actions’ At Thursday Meeting

Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon City Council Agenda usually begins with a series of what are termed ‘consent items’ that are all passed with one motion.  When the council meets this Thursday, January 2nd, the consent agenda will mainly deal with “New Year” actions, including the appointment of Pete Hamill to the O’Brien County EMA Commission and O’Brien County 911 Service Board, the appointment of Austin Klett as Assistant EMA Director,  acceptance of Duane Wahlstrom’s retirement from the Board of Adjustment, designation of official newspapers and designation of the deposit of City funds, as well as a wine permit and beer license renewal. The consent agenda will also include a resolution updating the roster and compensation for full-time union employees.

In other business, the council will review several proposals for the redevelopment of three city-owned properties.  The council will consider tentatively accepting the offer from Kent Lohrenz for the property at 428 West Park Street, as well as the offer from Log Cabin Enterprises for the Sunset Motel and Garfield Avenue property.  Sale of any City property requires a public hearing, and the topic will be on at least two more council agendas. Additional proposals are still possible.

In new business, there will be a discussion on updating the City’s five-year Capital Improvement Plan and the annual updating of the Emergency Services fifteen-year plan.  The Council will also consider the Iowa State University Extension recommendation regarding the public comment period in meetings. And, they’ll address a request to begin the hiring process for full-time and reserve police officers.

The last item on the council’s agenda will be in closed session to consider labor negotiations and employment conditions.

Please note that because of the New Year’s Day Holiday on Wednesday this council meeting will be held Thursday, January 2nd beginning at 4:30 in the upper level of the Sheldon Community Services Center.
