Sheldon, Iowa — The building known as the old ‘Thermo Cell’ building, near the intersection of Iselin Avenue and Hubbard Street, has been an eyesore and safety hazard for years. That building has been purchased by MidAmerican Energy, with the intention of demolishing it. When the City Council meets this Wednesday August 19th, they will consider some requests from the company that is planning the demolition. It’s reported that the basement of the building contains approximately 200,000 gallons of water. The demolition company is requesting permission to discharge the water into the city’s sanitary sewer. The water would be discharged at a rate approved by the city and pay $4.44 per thousand gallons discharged. They also request permission to close the nearby intersection while the work is being done. It is expected that the demolition project will begin in October of this year and is expected to take about six weeks to complete.
In other business, the council will be asked to approve the mayor’s appointment of Lisa Stammer, as well as the re-appointments of Donna Hoadley and Mark Poyzer to the Museum Board. They will also asked to approve the re-appointments of Ryan Becker and Rob Dixon to the Airport Commission and Myrna Wagner to the Planning and Zoning Commission. They will also be asked to accept the resignation of Recreation Coordinator Erin Swensen, and get an update from Brenda Collier representing Upper Des Moines Opportunity.
Wednesday’s meeting begins at 4:30 in the upper level of the Sheldon Community Services Center.
