Council To Revisit Nuisance Property Redemption Proposals

Sheldon, Iowa — The Redevelopment Proposals for three City properties are back on the agenda for the Sheldon City Council meeting Wednesday February 5th.  There will be a public hearing on a contract for deed for the former DJ’s Redemption Center at 428 West Park Street.  After the hearing, the Council will act on approval of the contract with Kent and Janet Lohrenz for that property.

The Council will then open bids for the Sunset Motel property, as well as the property at 1023 Garfield Avenue.  Both Tim Pottebaum of Log Cabin Enterprises, and Kerwin and Kathy Sterler, have made offers regarding both properties and the Council felt the best way to proceed would be to ask for sealed bids that must be submitted no later than Noon on this Wednesday, February 5th.  They will not be opened until the council meeting later that day.

In other business, the council will set a public hearing date on the ‘FY-20-21 Maximum Property Tax Dollars’.  This hearing is required by the new state law on property tax thresholds. They’ll also be asked to accept the resignations of Assistant Pavilion GM Heather Jacobs and Police Officer Jett Korver.

Mayor Greg Geels, along with Poppema-Sikma Construction, are scheduled to make a presentation to City employee Dave Andringa.   During the early morning hours of January 1st, Andringa was plowing snow on North 3rd Avenue when he saw Bob Poppema who had fallen on the parking lot, a good distance from the street.  Andringa stopped and rescued Poppema who had fallen about one and a half hours earlier and could not get to his cell phone.

The last two agenda items will be addressed in closed sessions.  The first is in regard to a tentative settlement agreement negotiated by the City’s Liability Insurance Carrier.  The other item concerns labor negotiations and employment conditions.

Wednesday’s meeting begins at 4:30 in the upper level of the Sheldon Community Services Center.
