Council To Tackle Varied Agenda At Wednesday Meeting

Sheldon, Iowa — When the Sheldon City Council meets Wednesday afternoon, they’ll face a rather varied agenda.

The council is expected to set the date and time for a public hearing on agreements between the City of Sheldon and Bethel Reformed Church for the facilitation of demolition of Bethel’s vacant church building, which is located at the corner of 7th Street and 6th Avenue. The church building was severely damaged in a Sunday afternoon fire that occurred more than 5 years ago and hasn’t been usable since that time.

The council is also set to take up the matter of authorizing funds for the City to clean up a nuisance property located a 229 North 5th Avenue. They’re also expected to approve a $100,254.42 partial payment on the Crossroads North infrastructure project, as well as adopt the 2021-22 Budget Amendment.

In other action, the council will discuss multiple urban revitalization items, as well as take up an Ambulance Affiliation Agreement between the Sheldon Community Ambulance Team and the Boyden Ambulance. The agreement is required of Boyden, based upon the number of calls they answer each year. Since SCAT and Boyden Ambulance share the same protocols and the same Medical Director, and since the majority of patients transported by the Boyden Ambulance are transported to the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center, the directors of the two ambulance services thought the affiliation was a good fit.

The council is also scheduled to get a look at updates to the City’s Capital Improvement Plan. City Manager Sam Kooiker says that will allow councilmembers enough time to digest the material prior to the council’s budget workshops, which are scheduled for late January.

Following the main agenda, the council is expected to go into closed session, for the purpose of discussing a potential purchase of real estate.

Wednesday’s Sheldon City Council meeting will begin at 4:30 in Council Chambers at the Sheldon Community Services Center. You may attend in person, or watch the livestream of the meeting on YouTube Live.
