Council Votes To Give $15,000 Toward Curb And Gutter For Former Bethel Property

Sheldon, Iowa — After much discussion, the Sheldon City Council has voted to give $15,000 to contractor Justin Postma.

Postma is the second developer to try to do something with the former Bethel church property. The first developer was going to put garages in the rear of the property and leave the angle parking in the front as-is. But with the plan that Postma is working on, he says there will be driveways in the front.

Sheldon Public Works Director Todd Uhl explains that there were some other unexpected costs involved.

The members of the council that were present seemed to feel like the City should help pay part of the costs, especially since they would prefer curb and gutter to be installed. That is, except for council member Brad Hindt, who asked Uhl if the City was REQUIRING curb and gutter.

Council member Pete Hamil, who was serving as Mayor Pro Tem for the meeting, made a motion to give Postma the $30,000, but no one seconded the motion until Hamil agreed to amend the motion. In the end, the council voted to give Postma half of what he asked for — $15,000 instead of $30,000. The measure passed 3 to 1, with Hindt voting no.
