Spirit Lake, Iowa — A Spirit Lake man has been ruled competent to stand trial in the shooting death of his former girlfriend outside a Milford business in February of this year.
Attorneys for 25-year-old Christian Goyne-Yarns had requested their client undergo a competency evaluation to determine whether or not he was competent to stand trial in the February shooting death of Shelby Woizeschke. That competency evaluation determined last month that Goyne-Yarns is competent to stand trial in the case.
Goyne-Yarns entered a written plea of not guilty to 1st Degree Murder in Dickinson County court this past spring. He had been scheduled to go on trial for 1st Degree Murder in Dickinson County District Court at Spirit Lake back in August, but that trial was postponed pending the outcome of his competency evaluation. No new trial date has been set, according to online court records.
Goyne-Yarns’ attorneys have asked the court to move his trial out of Dickinson County, and a hearing on that issue us scheduled for this coming Wednesday, October 5th in Dickinson County Court.
He’s accused of shooting Shelby Woizeschke multiple times on February 3rd of this year, outside GrapeTree Medical Staffing in Milford, where she was employed. Police say Woizeschke was able to call 911 and identify her attacker. She died a few days later in a Sioux Falls hospital.
