Buena Vista County, Iowa — The USDA has confirmed a positive case of highly pathogenic bird flu in a commercial turkey flock in Buena Vista County.
Governor Kim Reynolds announced Friday the signing of a disaster proclamation for BV County, which is in effect through November 19th. The proclamation allows state resources from Iowa Homeland Security, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, and other agencies to assist with tracking and monitoring, rapid detection, containment, disposal, and disinfection.
This marks the first commercial turkey flock in BV County to be infected with bird flu since January of this year. Six flocks in BV County, including five commercial turkey flocks, were infected with bird flu last year.
Avian influenza doesn’t present an immediate public health concern, and it remains safe to eat poultry products. Producers should contact their veterinarian immediately if they suspect signs of bird flu in their flocks.
