DNR: Try Fishing This Weekend — No License Required

Colten's First FishStatewide Iowa — If you’ve always wanted to try your hand at fishing — or perhaps you used to fish when you were a kid and now want to introduce your kids to it — this weekend may be your chance.

Jim Wahl, Regional Fisheries Supervisor with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says that on June 3rd, 4th, and 5th, you can fish in Iowa without a license.

He says that you should still know and follow the law, however.

Wahl explains the State’s motive behind Free Fishing Days.

He says there’s a reason they do the free fishing days in early June.

KIWA has received word of fishing derbies going on in Iowa during the weekend. One of them will be at Lake Pahoja in Lyon County, where they’re also waiving the entrance fee for the weekend.

If you’d like to know some good spots to take your kids fishing or even just to try it out yourself, Wahl also suggests checking with local bait shops, or even calling the DNR. He says they’d be happy to suggest a place where the fishing is good.

He also reminds Iowans that any day of the year, those who are fifteen and younger don’t need a fishing license in Iowa. It’s just that this weekend, the adults don’t need a license either.
