Calumet, Iowa — O’Brien County Sheriff Bruce Devereaux has released more information on Sunday’s domestic violence incident in Calumet. Devereaux released the following statement……….
On February 13th, the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting a domestic violence assault that just occurred at 206 South Morse Avenue in Calumet. The victim reported that during the domestic altercation, her husband used the butt of the shotgun to strike her in the side of the head. The victim reported that when she broke free and ran out of the house, her husband fired the shotgun at her.
An O’Brien County Deputy responded immediately and identified the suspect as 41-year-old Paul Matthew Long of Calumet. The O’Brien County Deputy verified that Long was still inside his residence. It was learned that Long made multiple statements about wanting to shoot it out with the police. The O’Brien County Deputy requested mutual aid from surrounding agencies to assist with establishing a perimeter. Several area agencies responded to assist in attempting to make contact with Long. The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office is an active member of the High Risk Entry and Arrest Team. The H.E.A.T. team was activated to help resolve the situation.
Paul Long exited his residence after a short standoff and was taken into custody. Long was transported to MercyOne Primghar Hospital for a minor injury and was released shortly after from their medical care. Long was transported to the O’Brien County Jail and booked in on the following charges:
Attempted Murder – Class B Felony
Domestic Abuse Assault w/ Intent to Inflict Serious Injury – 1st Offense – Aggravated Misdemeanor
Domestic Abuse Assault Impeding Flow of Air/Blood – Aggravated Misdemeanor
Domestic Abuse Assault – Causing Injury or Mental Illness – 1st Offense – Serious Misdemeanor.
On Monday (February 14th) Paul Long was seen by a Magistrate Judge and given his initial appearance. The Magistrate Judge set Long’s bond at $30,000 Cash Only. A no contact order was issued between Long and the victim.

Calumet, Iowa — A Calumet man was arrested Sunday after an alleged domestic assault.
According to court records, a domestic disturbance call at the home of 41-year-old Paul Matthew Long led to charges of Attempted Murder, a Class B Felony; Domestic Abuse Assault Causing Injury, a Serious Misdemeanor; Domestic Abuse Assault Impeding Flow of Air or Blood, an Aggravated Misdemeanor; and Domestic Assault With Intent to Inflict Serious Injury, an Aggravated Misdemeanor.
Deputies say that during the course of a domestic altercation, Long allegedly choked his female victim, struck her with the butt of a shotgun causing bodily injury, allegedly pointed a shotgun at the victim’s face placing her in fear for her life, and allegedly fired a 12-gauge shotgun towards the victim with the intent to cause her death.
Long was taken to the O’Brien County Jail.
