Domestic Violence Simulation At Boyden-Hull Jr/Sr High School

Hull, Iowa — The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office, in cooperation with the Sioux County Attorney’s Office and the Family Crisis Center recently presented a Domestic Violence Awareness Simulation at Boyden-Hull Junior and Senior High School.

The simulation, entitled “In Her Shoes”, which is developed and owned by the Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence, was presented to the schools’ faculty and staff one day, then to the students the next.

Sioux County School Resource Officer, Deputy Waylon Pollema tells KIWA that the participants put themselves into the shoes of someone in one of the real-life scenarios described in the simulation.

Statistics show an increase in the number of incidents of domestic violence, and Deputy Pollema says the simulation helps create awareness of the situation.

Pollema acknowledged that some of the people involved in the simulation may have witnessed domestic violence in their own home.

He talks about the feedback they received following the simulation at Boyden-Hull.

Deputy Pollema says the “In Her Shoes” Domestic Violence Simulation will be presented at both Western Christian and Unity Christian high schools in the next several weeks, and he hopes to take it to other schools in Sioux County, as well.
