Doon, Iowa — Unlike many town festivals, which were canceled this year, Doon Days is going to happen as scheduled.
We talked with Holli Dryfout, who’s on the Doon Days Committee and she tells us what’s planned.
(as said:) “We thought it’d be a good idea to kind of have a little fun for Doon Days on account of everything that’s been going on. So we just thought we’d like to celebrate family and friends. We’re going to start with a poker run on Saturday, July 18. You can meet at Burns Grill at 12:30 and then you will be given maps. Sunday we are going to have a community worship service with coffee served. Also Sunday evening the Vacation Bible School — since that didn’t happen this year — they’re going to have a little program at the community center.”
She tells us that activities will resume next Thursday.
(as said:) “Thursday, July 23 we’re going to have our community picnic starting at six o’clock. We’ll be serving hamburgers, hot dogs, and chips. Along with that will have fire truck rides at 7:00. And then also that evening we’re going to have a fastpitch softball game starting at 7:30 at the Doon ball field featuring the Northwest Iowa Athletics and Lester. And Friday, July 24, we’re going to have food served in the park starting at 5:30, ice cream, along with cruise night, burnouts, and we will have a fireworks display at dusk by the CFE Elevator area with karaoke at nine o’clock at Burns Grill. And Saturday we will kick off the day with a pancake breakfast starting at 7 a.m. Again, they’ll be a Bonnie Doon 5K with a parade at 11:00, lunch in the park by local churches and schools. There will also be a car show starting at 12:30 by the community center “
She says tells us about the other activities on Saturday the 25th, and into that evening.
(as said:) “The firemen are hosting a bag tournament and it’s for all ages young and old. We’ll have a balloon release at 5 p.m. honoring our service members and again a picnic in the park will be a fundraiser for a new community center being prepared by Burns Grill and we’ll cap the night off with a street dance at 9 p.m. on Main Street featuring Johnny Holm Band. You have to be ages 21 and older.”
Dryfout says they do have some things they want you to keep in mind.
(As said:) “During this time again we’d like to please follow social distancing guidelines. And if you need any parade forms or anything, you can contact our Facebook page, ‘Doon Days.'”
Again, Doon Days starts this Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th — and then picks up again next week Thursday, July 23rd, and runs through Saturday the 25th.
