Everly Restaurant Robbed; Alleged Crook Shoots Self

Barb's CornerEverly, Iowa — The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation into an armed robbery at a rural Everly restaurant and lounge Friday afternoon.

According to Clay County Sheriff’s officials, approximately 2:30 Friday afternoon, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office was advised of an armed robbery occurring at Barb’s Corner restaurant and bar, 1290 Highway 18, north of Everly.

Witnesses reported a male suspect entered Barb’s Corner brandishing a shotgun and demanding money from employees.  The employees complied with the robber’s demands and the male exited Barb’s, entered a silver vehicle and left northbound on 130th Avenue.

Officials say a short time later, a vehicle matching the suspect vehicle was reported by a citizen approximately seven miles west of Fostoria, and a Clay County Deputy was able to locate the suspect vehicle at about 2:45 pm.  Officials say the suspect traveled north into Dickinson County before slowing his vehicle and shooting himself.

Authorities say the scene was secured and medical personnel were allowed to provide care.  The suspect was transported to Lakes Area Regional Hospital in Spirit Lake and officials say it was expected he would be life-flighted for more extensive medical treatment for undisclosed injuries.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation and the Clay County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Spencer and Milford Police Departments, the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office, the Iowa State Patrol, the Clay and Dickinson County Attorneys’ Offices, Milford Fire and Rescue and Lakes Regional Healthcare paramedics.
