Northwest Iowa — The dry spell has allowed farmers to make progress toward getting the 2018 crop out. Combines continue to roar through many fields.
We talked with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Field Agronomist Joel De Jong and he tells us that the percentage of harvest that is complete seems to vary with location.
He says part of that is due to weather and field conditions.
De Jong says that he hopes we can stay rain-free for a while now. He says we have a full moisture profile, and any precip that falls now will just slow down harvest.
According to De Jong, this is the time that he urges people not to be careless — on the roads or in the field.
As of the latest crop report, 49 percent of Iowa’s corn and 71 percent of the state’s soybeans had been harvested.
