Expert: Time To Maintain Farm Buildings Before Snow Flies

Northwest Iowa — Harvest is the big topic on the minds of farmers this season. But one expert is reminding farmers not to forget to seal up those buildings before the snow flies too.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Agricultural Engineer Kris Kohl says that many building maintenance issues should probably be taken care of before winter to stop the deterioration of buildings and to save the energy that would otherwise be lost.

Kohl says one of the big things to take care of is places where rodents can come in. He says you could use spray foam or another method.

He says it’s also a good time to check for cracks in reinforced concrete. Outside slabs especially need to have cracks sealed to prevent ice from jacking them apart or destroying them.

Kohl says you should also take a look at wooden building components.

For more information, you can call Kohl at the Buena Vista County Extension Office in Storm Lake.
