Few Contested Races In Osceola County In November

Sibley, Iowa — Several candidates are running for school and city positions in Osceola County in November. And citizens will also be asked if they approve of a bond issue for improving the law enforcement center and jail.

In Ashton, incumbent Mayor Patrick H. DeVries is running for re-election. One current council member is also running for re-election — Mark Vanderpol. There are two seats available. Also running is John Corbett.

Harris Mayor Russell Meier is running unopposed, as are three council candidates — incumbent Amy Muftah, and both Tammie Coenen and James M. Morgan.

In Melvin, the mayor seat is up for election, but no one filed, so the winner will be a write-in. Both incumbent council members are running again for the two seats available, and they are unopposed. They are Amy S. Baker and Chris Michelson.

Ocheyedan Mayon Arlyn Duane Pedley is running for re-election, unopposed, as are councilmembers Travis Boeke and Kevin L. Hertz. Additionally, there is one Ocheyedan Council position that no one has filed for, so that position will be filled by a write-in.

The mayor position is not on the ballot in Sibley, but three people are vying for the at-large council position. They include incumbent Lynelle Thiner, and challengers Dave Myers and Alex Ties. And Joshua Tangeman is running unopposed for the Ward 2 position.

Meanwhile, for the Sibley-Ocheyedan School District Board of Directors, there are two seats available — Districts 2 and 5. However, no one filed for either position, so the winners will be write-ins.

The ballot question — Osceola County Public Measure QP — asks about improvements to the jail. The full text reads:

“Shall the County of Osceola, State of Iowa, issue its General Obligation Bonds or General Obligation Capital Loan Notes in an amount not exceeding the amount of $5,000,000 for the purpose of designing, erecting, reconstructing, extending, equipping and furnishing of the existing Osceola County Law Enforcement Center including partial demolition and related site improvements?”
