Sheldon, Iowa — In disasters like this flood, of course there are countless stories of people helping their neighbors. And that is much appreciated by everyone. This is just one story that we’re aware of.
Six customers of the Sheldon Water System were without water due to the Floyd River’s impact on Sheldon’s 10-inch water line on the north side of Highway 18, west of Western Avenue/McKinley Avenue.
Sheldon City Manager Sam Kooiker tells us that the Sheldon Public Works Department, Sheldon’s Farmer’s Market (Dave Vande Brake) and the Sheldon Fire Company undertook one of the more innovative projects in City history by using 3,000 feet of fire transfer hose provided by partnering fire departments to reconnect water to the Sheldon Motel, Northwest Iowa Community College, Tradewinds Apartments, and several homes. He says the three fire departments that also provided piping are Sanborn, Ashton, and Hospers, all of whom have problems of their own but were willing to help.
Kooiker says, “Three are in City Limits, three are not. All six are important to us.”
Kooiker tells us one of these homes has more than ten people from Rock Valley who lost their homes, so “while this may seem like a small project, it is time and resource intensive and a crucial project.
He says these customers will be on a boil advisory — but just to be clear — he emphasizes that the rest of Sheldon is NOT on a boil advisory, but they do ask you to PLEASE continue to conserve water.
