Firefighters Put Out Hog Building Fire Near Doon

Doon Fire Dept FD 1Doon, Iowa — A hog barn was damaged in a fire on Saturday, April 15, 2017 near Doon.

According to Doon Fire Chief Rod Postma, about 11:20 a.m., the Doon Fire Department was called to the report of a hog barn fire at 2365 260th Street, four and a half miles west of Doon on A52.

The chief says the fire department saw lots of smoke as they approached the scene. He says they used water to fight the fire.

He says the cause of the fire appeared to be electrical in nature.

Chief Postma reports that there were no hogs in the facility. He says the northeast roof and side walls were extensively damaged. He says that there was significant water and smoke damage. According to Postma, the roof will need to be torn off to fix the damage. He says the loss would have been much more significant had there been hogs in the facility, since there was heavy smoke. He says firefighters had to attack the fire while wearing air packs.

Postma says no injuries were reported.

He says they used four to five thousand gallons of water to fight the fire, and crews were on scene until 12:30 p.m.
