Sheldon, Iowa — The residential apartment fire that claimed a life early Monday morning is the first fatal fire the community has seen in decades.
According to the Sheldon Fire Department, it has been more than 35-years since the last fatal fire in the community.
This is, however, the second fatal fire in the broadcast area this month. On Sunday night, April 3rd, a Sibley man perished in a fire that gutted his residence.
Prior to the April 3rd Sibley fire, the last fire death in recent memory occurred in George in February of 2018, when a residential house fire claimed the life of a 9-year-old.
Coincidentally, all three of the most recent fatal area fires occurred during a weekend. The 2018 George blaze happened on an early Sunday morning, the April 3rd Sibley fatal fire occurred late on a Sunday night, with the Sheldon blaze taking place during the wee hours of Monday morning.
