Le Mars, Iowa — A former northwest Iowa Police Chief has been sentenced on felony charges.
Fifty-five-year-old James Dunn was the Kingsley, Iowa Police Chief. He was accused of using resources available to him in his police role for personal reasons.
According to a criminal complaint filed with the Plymouth County Clerk of Court by the DCI, Dunn is accused of using a mobile data terminal belonging to the Kingsley Police Department to search for criminal data for personal reasons unrelated to his duties as a peace officer and allegedly using the data to harass three victims in his personal life, including his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend.
Court records indicate that Dunn received a deferred judgment on five counts of unauthorized dissemination of intelligence history data, a class D felony. One count was dismissed. Six misdemeanor counts of unauthorized dissemination of criminal history data, and two class D felony counts of stalking were also dismissed. On the three remaining counts of nonfelonious misconduct in office, Dunn was sentenced to 30 days in jail. He must also serve three years’ probation.
