Sutherland, Iowa — A new $1.9 million community center and Legion building is planned in Sutherland.
The former Sutherland bowling alley at the corner of Ash and Second Streets was demolished last month in preparation for the project.
We had a chance to talk to the chairman of the R.L. Johannsen Community Center, Steve Koch. He says the planning started a while back.
Koch gives us an update on construction progress.
He says they hope to have it finished up by December of this year, but he says it could take until February, 2016. Koch says the building will serve a number of uses and individuals.
He says the medical equipment is available for loan to those who need it.
Koch says the building will be totally handicapped-accessible and a nice place for a number of city functions. He says it will be directly south of the current Legion building.
Koch says there’s a fundraiser for the building on Sunday, March 8th.
He says if you want more information, you can email sutherlandcommunitycenter@hotmail.com or call 712-446-3834. He says they are a 501(c)(3) organization, so all donations to the new community center are tax-deductible.
