George-Little Rock Mustang Homecoming Is This Week

George, Iowa — Most high schools in the area celebrate homecoming during the football season. But one school doing things differently is George-Little Rock.

George-Little Rock students do have the opportunity to play football — with students from Central Lyon as the combined Central Lyon/George-Little Rock Lions. But during basketball season, the teams are separate and the Mustangs and Lions actually play each other.

The theme for George-Little Rock Homecoming 2021 is “Tale as Old as Time.”

Candidates for the Mustang Homecoming Court include Riley Aeikens, son of Ben and Karie Aeikens and Eric and Amber Timmer; Emily Greve, daughter of Aaron and Jennifer Greve; Ben Anderson, son of Bryan and Rachel Anderson; Aftin Groen, daughter of Cory and Tammy Groen; Will Hamilton, son of Brian and Kristine Hamilton; Lexi Hengeveld, daughter of Trisha Hengeveld and Daniel Hangeveld; Noah Wessels, son of Chad and Barb Wessels; Olivia Johnson, daughter of Mike and Andrea Johnson; Dylan Winkel, son of Jeff and Karen Winkel; and Chloe Smit, daughter of Jerry and Jen Smit. Coronation is this Monday night at 7 p.m.

One of the activities will be dress-up days. Monday was Pajama Day. Tuesday will be Country versus Country Club. Wednesday is class color day, and students as young as sixth grade will be able to participate. Seniors will dress in black, juniors in white, sophomores in gray, freshmen in orange, eighth-graders in brown, seventh-graders in green, and sixth-graders in yellow. Staff will also get into the act, dressing in red. Thursday will be teacher day, and Friday will be spirit day.

Unlike football, there will actually be three basketball nights during homecoming week, in addition to other activities. Tuesday it’s ninth grade and varsity girls and boys basketball versus Sioux Center in George and JV and varsity wrestling at Sioux Center. Thursday there will be JV and Varsity Boys Basketball versus West Lyon in George. Friday it’s ninth grade and varsity girls and boys basketball versus Sheldon in George. That game will be broadcast live on KIWA AM 1550 and FM 100.7. Joe Nilles will have the play-by-play, live from the George-Little Rock Gym. Then on Saturday, there’s District Large Group Speech and Varsity Wrestling. The wrestlers will travel to Parkston, South Dakota.
