Governor Cuts Ribbon, Congratulates Rock Valley On Progress A Year After The Flood

Rock Valley, Iowa — The Governor of Iowa was in Rock Valley today (Tuesday) to help Rock Valley citizens and leaders celebrate the recovery that they have made since the floods a year ago.

With construction equipment working behind her, Governor Kim Reynonds told those gathered at the new Valley Vue housing development on the east side of the community, that she’s glad to be able to celebrate the recovery with them.

She says she flew over the damage the day after the flood — before the waters had receded — and it was heartbreaking.

She says the community’s biggest loss was the life of Kyle Kreykes. She says her prayers continue for his family.

But as far as the material things, Reynolds says it’s amazing how far Rock Valley has come in a year’s time.

Rock Valley Mayor Kevin Van Otterloo also spoke at the event. He said, “This is a day of reflection, resilience, and hope. While we have come a long way, I want to acknowledge that many in our community are still hurting, still searching for answers, and still rebuilding their lives. Please know—you have not been forgotten.”

The governor then cut the ribbon for the new housing development being finished.

City officials say the public event served as both a reflection on the past and a declaration of the future. They say, “Rock Valley is recovering, rebuilding, and ready for what’s next.”
