Governor Issues Official Half-Staff Order For Memorial Day

Des Moines, Iowa — Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has issued her official half-staff order for Memorial Day.

The governor has ordered all flags in Iowa to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to noon on Monday, May 29, 2023, in honor of Memorial Day and directed that the National League of Families POW/MIA flag also be flown on the Capitol grounds for the entire day.

Reynolds says, “Memorial Day serves as an opportunity to honor and remember the patriots who gave their lives protecting the privileges and freedoms we as a country hold dear. The debt we owe our nation’s veterans and active service members is not repaid in one day. Every day we must live up to the promise and values of the country they fought for.”

Flags will be at half-staff on the State Capitol Building and on flag displays on the Capitol Complex. Flags will also be at half-staff on all public buildings, grounds and facilities throughout the state.

Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties, and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect.
