Granville Area Farmer Must Pay $10,000 After Manure Discharge

Granville, Iowa — A Granville area dairy farm needs to pay $10,000 after a manure release to an area creek.

According to an administrative consent order from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Nate Zuiderveen will have to pay the penalty in regard to a manure release from his dairy, Black Soil Dairy in rural Granville.

The DNR says a manure flume system beneath one of the free stall confinement barns became plugged on a Friday this past March. Zuiderveen was out of town at the time and his employees were under the impression that the tile intakes they saw the manure entering were connected to the manure storage system when they actually eventually fed into a tributary of Deep Creek. It says Zuiderveen stopped the discharge and did what he could when he returned on Monday.

The DNR says the discharge of manure from the facility resulted in the degradation of water quality through elevated pollutant levels and dead fish.
