Grim Deposit Discovered At Sheldon Tree Dump

Sheldon, Iowa — Sheldon Police are investigating a dumping incident at the Sheldon Tree Dump on North Washington Avenue that was discovered Monday.

City Manager Sam Kooiker says a somewhat disturbing mess was found.

(As above) “We believe the remains of three to four large hogs were found out there and somebody was either slaughtering out there or dumped the remains out there, and they created a huge mess for staff to clean up and that type of situation creates a problem for everybody else who wants to use the dump to dump trees, which is what it’s supposed to be used for.”

Kooiker says Sheldon Police are investigating the incident.

(As above) “It’s a bad situation, we’re investigating it, I understand we’ve already received couple of tips on it, we encourage people to call the Sheldon Police Department at 324-2525 if they have any idea of who did this.”

We asked Kooiker if the tree dump might be closed should such misuse continue.

(As above) “We really don’t want to do that. People really and we really enjoy as a community providing this, and it’s a service not only for the community it’s a service for the city, because the more cleanup that can be encouraged by people it helps the city too. So I think that before we consider closing the dump we’d have to spend tax dollars on additional security measures.”

He says the city has had occasional problems with people misusing the leaf dump, as well.

(As above) “From time to time we have items dumped in the leaf dump, too, behind Hills Park. We had a couch that was dumped last Saturday, and so those types of issues really create a problem for the city and for the staff that have to clean it up.”

Sheldon Police Chief Scott Burtch tells KIWA that the person or persons who left the hog remains at the tree dump will face a misdemeanor criminal charge once identified.
