Half-Staff Flags Are To Honor Sailor Killed At Pearl Harbor

Des Moines, Iowa — Flags are at half-staff across Iowa today from sunrise to sunset. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds ordered the half-staff to honor a sailor who was killed during World War Two.

Nineteen-year-old Navy Seaman Second Class Bernard Doyle, of Red Cloud, Nebraska was aboard the USS Oklahoma when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. He was among some 400 sailors who died on the ship in the attack. His remains had been unidentified until March of this year. Doyle’s remains were returned to his family for burial in Lake City, Iowa today at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lake City.

Flags are at half-staff on the State Capitol Building and on flag displays in the Capitol Complex. Flags are also at half-staff on all public buildings, grounds, and facilities throughout the state.

Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect.
