Sheldon, Iowa – Hands-on learning and fun activities are in store once again for northwest Iowa elementary and middle school students. And registration is open now.
“STEM” is a big topic these days in education. “STEM” stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Fall STEM Fest 2018 — hosted by Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon and Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach 4-H and Youth Programs — will be held Saturday, October 27th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at NCC in Sheldon. A while back, we talked to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Youth Program Specialist Ben Pullen, and he told us what STEM Fest is all about.
Sarah Fiddelke, the O’Brien County Extension Youth Coordinator tells us that STEM Fest is open to all area 4th through 8th-grade students, but maximum capacity is 80 students.
She says check-in will begin at 8:30 a.m. in Building A with the sessions beginning at 9:00 a.m. A public showcase will be held at 2:30 p.m. after which youth will be dismissed for the day.
Sessions include Taekwondo, Drone Discovery, Water Quality, From Sap to Syrup, Robot Olympics, Fossils, Paper Circuits, Compound Bow, Heart Monitors, Makey-Makey’s, Makers Space, and Looking at Science.
According to Fiddelke, there is no registration fee for this event; however, parents must register their child(ren) online and choose their child’s first, second and third choice color track which consists of different sessions and activities. Organizers will attempt to honor color track choices, but sessions fill up quickly. No changes to color tracks will happen the day of the event.
Online registration can be completed at https://form.jotform.com/4Hregion1/2018-fall-stem-fest. Registration will close October 23 or sooner if the maximum of 80 youth is reached prior to that date.
