Hawarden Man To Prison For Sex Crime

Orange City, Iowa — A Hawarden man has been sentenced to prison on a charge of Assault With Intent To Commit Sexual Abuse.

Sioux County Attorney Thomas Kunstle says 33-year old Antonio Rodriguez-Diaz was sentenced to 2-years in prison on the Aggravated Misdemeanor crime of Assault with Intent to Commit Sexual Abuse.

Kunstle says the case dates back to May of last year, when police learned that Rodriguez-Diaz had allegedly committed a sexual act with a minor in 2015. Further investigation revealed Rodriguez-Diaz had allegedly committed sexual abuse and indecent contact with a child, and was charged with those crimes on May 24, 2017. Kunstle says a warrant was issued, since Rodriguez-Diaz had fled. He was located by the Hawarden Police Department and arrested on March 24 of this year.

According to Kunstle, Rodriguez-Diaz pled guilty in Sioux County District Court to an amended charge of Assault with Intent to Commit Sexual Abuse, on the condition he go to prison.

Kunstle says Rodriguez-Diaz was sentenced to two years in prison, a 10-year term of parole supervision, and ordered to register as a sex offender for life. The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has placed a hold on Rodriguez-Diaz and, upon the expiration of his prison term, ICE will take custody of Rodriguez-Diaz and begin deportation proceedings.
