Homecoming Friday Includes Parade, Football Game

Sheldon, Iowa — Homecoming Week is drawing nearer to an end for students at Sheldon Community High School, but Friday is filled with Homecoming events.

Friday’s theme is “There’s No Place Like Home,” which fits into the overall Homecoming Week theme of “Home.” It’s also been proclaimed “Orange and Black Day,” with faculty and students encouraged to wear their school colors.

Friday will have a shortened class schedule, with classes held from 8:20 to 10:58 am. The O’Brien County Cattlemen will be on hand at the High School to grill burgers for lunch.

Friday afternoon features a talent show, with the Homecoming Parade departing the middle school parking lot at 2:15. Student Leadership Team member Tara Fjeld talks about what you’ll see when you watch the Homecoming Parade.

(As above) “Our parade is going to feature our Homecoming (Royalty) Candidates. It’s going to have the High School Marching band, the clubs, organizations, the Dance Team will be dancing. We’ll also have the retired teachers, having them ride in the parade. Then we’re going to have our Orab cooks and Cafe members, because they really did so much for us this summer and we just wanted to make sure that we appreciate them, as well as our custodians, because they have been working extra hard to keep the school clean, especially with the whole COVID regulations that we have right now.”

From the middle school parking lot, the parade will travel south down 23rd Avenue to East 6th Street, then proceed west on East 6th to Union Avenue, where it will head north to East 4th Street, then east on 4th Street, past the high school, ending up in the high school parking lot north of the Outdoor Aquatic Center.

If you’d like to see the parade, high school Principal Sherrie Zeutenhorst says you can park in the parking lot on the south side of Immanuel Christian Reformed Church and view the parade as it passes along 6th Street.

If you can’t attend in person, KIWA will feature a LIVE video stream of the parade, that will be available at kiwaradio.com, as well as KIWA’s Facebook page. The parade audio will also be broadcast live on KIWA-FM 105.3. A map of the parade route can be viewed below.

Friday’s festivities conclude with the Homecoming Football Game against Central Lyon/George-Little Rock, with kick-off at 7:00 Friday evening at Orab Field. That game, as well as all Orab football games, can be heard on KIWA-AM 1550 and FM-100.7, and, as with all Orab home football games, viewed live on KIWA’s Facebook page.
