Sibley, Iowa — Add Sibley-Ocheyedan’s football homecoming to the list of COVID-19 casualties. But, if it’s possible this winter, there will be a homecoming during the winter sports season.
Sibley-Ocheyedan is already in the middle of what was to be Homecoming week 2020, but according to superintendent James Craig, it has been a much different week with so many students and staff districtwide unable to participate due to COVID-19 and quarantines.
Craig tells us that the change they are going to make was actually student-led. Specifically, Craig says members of the homecoming court approached the administration advocating for their classmates who have not been able to partake in homecoming activities this week and more that they would miss as the week continues. He says they requested to move homecoming activities to the winter sports season, and the administration has granted that request. More details will be announced as they become available for the parade, pep rally, and game that will be identified as the Homecoming game.
Meanwhile, dress-up days will continue through the end of this week as scheduled.
But there’s more bad news. Craig says that not only will it not be homecoming this Friday, there won’t even be a varsity football game.
He says that due to quarantine, their football team is short many players. The coaches have determined that there would not be enough players left to safely participate in the game that had been scheduled for Friday night. So, he says, this Friday night’s game against Emmetsburg will be canceled. Due to the nature of the football schedule, this game cannot be rescheduled, says Craig. He says the game will go down as a no-contest for both teams, and the Generals will hold their 3-1 record moving forward.
