Iowa Fieldwork Last Week Limited by Timely Rainfall

Northwest Iowa — While corn and soybean planting continued last week, the USDA Crop Progress Report says some Iowa producers are waiting for warmer and drier conditions to start spraying.

The report says while last week’s rain was needed, it limited farmers statewide to less than four days suitable for fieldwork. Only three days were suitable for fieldwork in northwest Iowa.

Corn planted statewide reached 95 percent. Corn emerged reached 76 percent, six days ahead of last year, and two days ahead of the five-year average. In northwest Iowa, 97 percent of corn is planted, with 85 percent emerged. 83 percent of Iowa corn is rated good-to-excellent.

Soybeans planted statewide reached 92 percent, which is just over two weeks ahead of last year, and eight days ahead of the five-year average. Soybeans emerged reached 60 percent, eight days ahead of last year, and four days ahead of the average. In northwest Iowa, 95 percent of soybeans are planted, with 70 percent emerged. 80 percent of Iowa soybeans are rated good-to-excellent.

78 percent of northwest Iowa topsoil has adequate moisture, up 34 percent from last week.

62 percent of northwest Iowa subsoil has adequate moisture, up eight percent from last week.
